Area: Mygdonian Basin – National Park of Koroneia, Volvi and Macedonian Tempe

Study Category: Environmental (27)

A special environmental study has been carried out to address many problems that have arisen in the Mygdonia Basin area under Joint Ministerial Decision 6919/2004, due to insufficient verbal formulation on several issues, resulting in insoluble ambiguities but also insurmountable barriers to both the development of area, as well as for its urban planning, through the elaborated General Urban Plan and Open City Spatial and Housing Organization Plan of its Municipalities. The subject of the environmental study is the documentation of the population growth potential in the settlements in the Mygdonia basin, as well as the exploration of the uses and the functions that will follow it, on terms and conditions, for the purpose of its environmental protection.

For this purpose, the spatial data of the area, its developmental character (population evolution and economic activities), the data of the area and the environment (natural environment, flora, fauna, climatic data, existing sources of pollution, cultural and historical environment , existing and planned infrastructure networks, hydrogeological data and the residential network) as well as the current legislative framework with a critical view of the Joint Ministerial Decision 6919/2004.

Moreover, the most significant environmental impacts of residential development in the area were identified and evaluated and measures were proposed to address them. Finally, proposals for the correction of the Joint Ministerial Decision 6919/2004 were presented, which was amended in 2008, but again without solving all the problems, especially those related to spatial planning and development of the area.
