STUDIES FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE PROVINCIAL ROAD OF THESSALONIKI – ORAIOKASTRO (GALINI SETΤLEMENT)

Project Scope

The study concerns the improvement of a section of the 4th Provincial Road Thessaloniki–Oraiokastro, extending from Chainage 2+474.25 to Chainage 5+441.65, with the aim of adapting the road’s geometric and functional characteristics to the provisions of the Oraiokastro Municipality Urban Plan.

The overall project study includes a road design study, complemented by a series of supporting technical studies, including:

  • Topographical and urban planning study
  • Architectural and structural design of the pedestrian bridge and technical works
  • Hydraulic study
  • Electromechanical study
  • Geotechnical study
  • Environmental Impact Assessment

Main Interventions

The study includes the following key interventions:

  • Improvement of the road section within the Galini settlement, including widening of the roadway and construction of sidewalks on both sides of the road.
  • Construction of five (5) at-grade roundabouts, aimed at improving traffic organization, flow and safety.
  • Construction of one (1) pedestrian bridge, providing a safe connection between the eastern and western sections of the Galini settlement.

Study Objectives

The main objective of the project is to upgrade the existing road infrastructure and improve road safety and functionality for all road users.

More specifically, the proposed interventions aim to:

  • improve the geometric and functional characteristics of the road;
  • enhance road safety for drivers, pedestrians and other road users;
  • reduce traffic speeds;
  • improve traffic capacity;
  • reduce conflict points and potential collision risks;
  • improve traffic management and circulation;
  • provide safe and accessible pedestrian routes.

Particular emphasis is placed on the construction of the pedestrian bridge, which will provide a safe connection between the two sections of the Galini settlement. This intervention is particularly important for vulnerable road users, and especially for students, enhancing the safety of their daily journeys.
